The Liebherr 'LB 30 Unplugged’ drill rig, the world’s largest capacity fully battery-operated drill rig, is reducing emissions and noise pollution at the Kananook Train Stabling Yard.

ACCIONA, a global leader in sustainable infrastructure solutions, is proud to be the first to own and operate a fully electric drill rig for an Australian infrastructure project.

The Liebherr ‘LB 30 Unplugged’ rig, the world’s largest capacity fully battery-operated drill rig, is reducing emissions and noise pollution at the Kananook Train Stabling Yard, part of the Level Crossing Removal Project. It is enabling ACCIONA to contribute to the delivery of the local project in a more sustainable way.

ACCIONA Chief Executive Officer Australia & New Zealand, Bede Noonan, said, “Across our projects, we are actively incorporating the latest technology advancements to reduce the environmental impacts of construction projects.

“The electric drill rig is reducing the overall project emissions at the new train maintenance facility in Kananook and is a great example of how we are driving more sustainable outcomes.”

“On this site alone, the electric rig will reduce CO2 emissions by 15 tonnes – a reduction of emissions comparable to avoiding a return flight from Melbourne to Sydney. It also has the added advantage of no engine noise – mitigating noise pollution for the local community.”

“As new technology is released around the world, we will continue to be an early adopter of hybrid, electric and hydrogen equipment and vehicles to further reduce our environmental footprint.”

ACCIONA is committed to achieving a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030. In 2022, ACCIONA reduced its emissions in Australia and New Zealand by 15%, and more than 90% of investments in Australia were directed towards sustainable activities, including building wind farms and electric railways.

Globally, the company has been carbon neutral since 2016.
