ACCIONA, a global leader in sustainable infrastructure solutions, is pleased to announce that it has acquired 100% ownership of the Kwinana Waste-to-Energy project in an agreement reached with Macquarie Capital and Dutch Infrastructure Fund.

ACCIONA's investment provides certainty for the ongoing construction and future operation of the facility, its workers, and the local community.

As the owner of the Kwinana Waste-to-Energy project, ACCIONA is ideally placed to achieve completion and the successful operation of this facility that will deliver critical waste management infrastructure and sustainable energy to Western Australia.

The facility is on track to be operational in the last quarter of 2024 when it will divert up to 460,000 tonnes of waste per annum from landfill and deliver 38 megawatts of baseload power to the Western Power grid, sufficient to power more than 50,000 households.

This investment further supports our long-term commitment to Western Australia through the development of key sustainable infrastructure solutions including the Mundaring water treatment plant, the New Bayswater Station, and the Bunbury Outer Ring Road," Mr Noonan said.

ACCIONA will ensure a smooth transition and will continue to keep the State Government, local councils and key stakeholders informed of the project's progress as it continues to focus on completing the construction and bringing into operation this important waste-to-energy facility in Kwinana.

ABOUT THE KWINANA WASTE-TO-ENERGY PROJECT

  • The Kwinana Waste-to-Energy project will deliver sustainable energy to local households and businesses while diverting waste from landfill.
  • The facility will divert up to 460,000 tonnes of waste per annum from landfill and deliver 38 megawatts of baseload power to the Western Power grid, sufficient to power more than 50,000 households.
  • Diverting this waste from landfill will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 400,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to taking 85,000 cars off Perth’s roads.
  • To date, this project has created more than 3,543 jobs and will create c.50 permanent jobs for the life of the facility’s operations (25 years).
  • Local councils, including Rivers Regional Council members, Resource Recovery Group members and the City of Kwinana have agreed to provide waste to the Kwinana Waste-to-Energy facility.
